Evanescent

They suspected this

When you and I were in the plight

Of whether or not to relinquish

A thousand memories

And start anew

For we were walking on glass

Holding hands

Just a little too hard to be safe

And we began doubting if this path

Would ever come to an end

They suspected this

When I began holding back things from you

Hoping to clean sweep the glass aside

Not realizing I was carpeting underneath our feet

With more of it

They suspected this

When the lifeless, yellowed leaves

And crumpled pages

Told us how the fall had arrived

With the last page of this book

They suspected this

When I began breathing without you

Hoping the air would choke the life out of me instead

They suspected this

When I hoped my silence would tell you

How I had become afraid

Of the love you had to offer me

Alongside of a million vulnerabilities

While I had nothing.
